Some Tips for Holiday Furnace Care

Your furnace keeps you comfortably warm even during quiet times. During the holidays, when you’ll not only be throwing parties but may have guests staying for a few days, your furnace is going to work even harder. It’s important that it’s in good working order and can meet increased burdens placed on it. Here are some tips to make it so.

Have Your HVAC System Checked

The first thing you should do is have your HVAC system checked by an HVAC professional. This means the entire system and not just your furnace. The best time to do this is a few weeks before your first party. This gives the HVAC professional time to do some troubleshooting and repairs if necessary. It also gives you time to find the money to pay for any repairs that need to be made.

Clean Your Home

During the holidays, your furnace is already going to work harder than it normally does. Dust and dirt make it work harder still, since the debris gets into your vents and ductwork. In the weeks before you start to entertain, set up a cleaning routine to make your home as dirt and dust-free as you can.

Change the Filter

It’s a good idea to change the filters in all your home systems during the holiday, as just about every system is going to be working hard. You should also change your furnace’s filter, especially if you haven’t done so in a while. This not only helps your filter do its job, but it also keeps your indoor air clean.

Mind the Thermostat

The temperature in your public rooms doesn’t have to be all that high if those rooms are full of people. With that in mind, you might want to keep the thermostat at a temperature that’s a little cooler than you’d like. It will keep you and your guests comfortable and lower your energy bill. Make sure you have fresh batteries to keep your thermostat running.

Keep the Area Around the Furnace Clear

Make sure that the vicinity around your furnace is clear of all debris. This allows good air circulation, removes flammable objects and just makes it easier for you or your HVAC professional to access the furnace.

Install CO Detectors

If you don’t have carbon monoxide detectors in your home, buy them well before holiday entertaining. Put one near your furnace and others in your bedrooms, including the guest bedrooms.
