Fall HVAC Tune-Up Tips for Colorado Springs Homeowners

Tips for a Fall HVAC Tune-Up in Colorado Springs

Have you given any thought to whether your furnace can stand up to the first cold snap? When did you last have someone examine your heating system? Better to know now than discover it is on the fritz on the coldest night of the year.

We are Peak Home Performance and we put the heating systems of homeowners here in Colorado Springs and on the Front Range in good order when the mercury falls. Give us a ring at (719) 888-5705 to have a professional give your system once over before winter sets in.

There is no better time to put your HVAC in shape than in the fall. The mild weather affords you an opening to put right any problems while you do not yet have to rely on your furnace. In the Pikes Peak area, from Fountain to Monument, that opening does not stay open for long.

The Case for a Fall Tune-Up

You cannot make the weather in Colorado Springs wait. It is shirt-sleeve weather in the afternoons one week and you are chipping ice from your windshield the next. Your furnace has been idle through the summer; dust and debris have a way of accumulating in the quiet months as do minor mechanical troubles.

A tune-up in the fall will reveal trouble before it starts. You would rather find a part is worn out now than be faced with a complete breakdown come January.

Some Things You Can Put to Right Yourself

Any homeowner can see to these without breaking out any special equipment and they will make a difference in your system’s performance over the winter:

  • Put in a new air filter, then check it each month of the heating season
  • Move the clutter, boxes and furniture off the furnace
  • Vents, both supply and return, should be left open and unobstructed
  • Turn the thermostat to heat and see that warm air is coming through
  • Give the vent covers and registers in the house a good vacuuming
  • See to it the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are fresh
  • A walk around the exterior of the home to put leaves in their place away from outdoor units

They are not time consuming and they let your system run more efficiently.

Things to Be On the Lookout For

If you listen, your furnace will tell you what is amiss. Fire it up this fall and you may see some of these:

  • Banging or a squeal where there should not be
  • An odd smell, other than the passing scent of burning dust
  • Some rooms are fine and others remain cold
  • Short cycling, with the unit turning on and off of its own accord
  • Airflow from the vents is not what it should be
  • An energy bill that seems out of line with how much you are using

Should you come across any of them, have a pro have a look at it. They will not mend themselves and once the system is working hard all winter they tend to worsen.

When to Leave It to the Pros

For filters and vents you can do it yourself, but a proper tune-up is more involved. Our EPA-certified technicians will get to components most homeowners should not be near. We are talking about testing the electrical and the burners, verifying gas pressure and the heat exchanger, and making sure the system is venting as it ought to. A gas problem or a crack in the heat exchanger is not something to be casual about.
